Art onchain: digital art & tokens

Trish FablingJune 2024Immortalised on the Bitcoin blockchain

Artists are always exploring new methods of creating and delivering work and many are now expressing their art as inscriptions on Bitcoin Ordinals. As they expand their creative channels they're also able to gain new audiences and unlock more potential for profits. Once their art is tokenised on-chain it is cryptographically signed and can never be lost or duplicated.

I can help artists and brands dive into designing and promoting their work on the blockchain, giving them an advantage as frontrunners in the decentralised future that lies ahead. With my experience and connections with artists, developers and Web3 communities, using the latest technology, design and marketing trends, I can ensure a successful launch with maximum reach.

Below are just a few examples of how artists are creating digital art on Bitcoin. Every day dozens of collections are minted and added to marketplaces, including 3D animation, video, audio and every type of artistic style imaginable. With my thorough knowledge of the market I can guide artists and marketers to confidently launch a successful creative project that resonates with current trends and expectations.

Launchpads and marketplaces

There are numerous options for artists to deploy and sell their work, and the Bitcoin-native platforms have matured considerably. Satflow is built for active traders, with real-time mempool data, collection and bulk bidding, and sniping protection. UniSat runs an open-source wallet alongside its marketplace and minting tools, covering Ordinals, Runes and Alkanes in one place. ord.net is a straightforward marketplace for browsing, buying, selling and managing inscriptions, with an open trading API if you want to build on top of it.

Each has its merits depending on whether you're launching a collection or trading one. What they share is a trustless, non-custodial approach; trades settle on-chain through PSBTs, so artists and collectors keep control of their keys and their inscriptions throughout. Any Taproot-compatible wallet connects across all of them, which makes it easy to list in more than one place and follow the liquidity.

Digital to real world art

One of the many artists intertwining BTC Ordinals with tangible and exclusive art is the world renowned Parisian sculptor Leo Caillard. He was commissioned to create the Ordinal Runestone that launched the Runes Protocol on BTC, which he followed with his 3D collection The Block.

Owners of Blocks have the opportunity to trade them for Leo's beautifully crafted marble sculptures that sell at Sotheby's and feature in museums, universities and high-end European galleries.

While more artists are blending real and digital mediums, brands are doing the same with NFT collections incorporated into their fashion and entertainment labels, often providing exclusive content to NFT owners.

Music industry

Right now early adopters of NFT and Ordinal music content include French Montana with his Mac and Cheese album release PFPs and Wu Tang's Ghostface Killah's exclusive track given to 10,000 fans who could mint the audio and art by Rare Scrilla for free. This campaign was followed with a free airdrop of 'For the Children' Runes tokens to all holders.

The runes market is purely speculative and driven by influencer hype so only a few hold their value, which continues to perpetuate their success. Like any meme coin market, most go to zero, have no liquidity and are not backed by any utility or production but this will change as development continues.

Runes on BTC

Runes launched at the 2024 halving as Casey Rodarmor's answer to BRC-20, using Bitcoin's UTXO model rather than fighting it. Thousands of tokens were etched in the first week and minting briefly dominated block space. Most now trade below their mint price — the protocol handles issuance and transfer but nothing more, so there was never much for the speculation to mature into.

That's changing. Alkanes brings WASM smart contracts to Bitcoin, adding automated market makers, staking and free mints, along with its own NFT standard, Orbitals. Runes gained "agents" in 2025 enabling AMMs at layer one, and OYL's AMM introduces native liquidity pools this year.
